Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid

Aim of Course.
The aim of this qualification is to enable learners to attain knowledge and practical competencies needed to deal with a range of paediatric first aid situations, paediatric illness, injuries and emergencies. Learners should be able to demonstrate the practical administration of safe, prompt, effective first aid in situations which can arise when looking after children.

Intended audience.

This qualification is for people who have a specific responsibility at work or in voluntary and community activities, to provide first aid to children (including babies) when dealing with an emergency situation, chronic or sudden paediatric illness or paediatric injury.

Note: This qualification fulfils Ofsted's first aid requirements for early years teachers, nursery workers and child minders (as defined within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2014 and within the Child Care Register guide).

Course Content.

  • Understand the roles and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider.
  • Be able to assess an emergency situation safely
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and breathing normally.
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who is unresponsive and not breathing normally.
  • Be able to provide first aid for an infant and a child who has a foreign body airway obstruction.
  • Be able to provide first aid to an infant and a child with external bleeding.
  • Understand how to to provide first aid to an infant and a child who is suffering from shock.
  • Understand how to provide first aid to an infant and a child with anaphylaxis.
  • Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with injuries to bones, joints and muscles.
  • Be able to administer first aid to an infant and a child with head and spinal injuries.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with a chronic medical condition or sudden illness.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who is experiencing the effects of extreme heat and cold.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has sustained an electric shock.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child with burns and scalds.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been poisoned.
  • Understand how to administer first aid to an infant and a child who has been bitten or stung.
  • Understand how to to administer first aid to an infant and a child with minor injuries.
  • Understand how to complete records relating to illness, injuries and emergencies.

Course Duration.

2 Days.

Requalification Requirements.

The Level 3 Award in Paediatric Firs Aid is valid for a period of 3 years, within which time the learner will need to re-take the course and assessments in order to remain qualified. It is regarded as best practice for those holding first aid qualifications to undertake annual refresher training.
